Ki-woo Kim (Choi Woo-Shik) is a young man living in poverty in the slums of a nameless Southern Korean city with his family – father Ki-taek Kim (Song Kang-ho), mother Chung-sook Kim (Jang Hye-jin), along with sister Ki-jung (Park So-dam). The family lives in a yard unit where they fight finding a Wi-Fi signal to be able to sneak into in order to get access to the Internet to watch TV, get fumigated on, and have to watch adult men urinating in the alley outside the house their home. At some point, in the dead of night, they are able to sneak out. They return home to discover their apartment completely filled with rain and manure. Ki-woo takes the stone, and the family sleeps in the shelter for the night.
The following day, Mrs. Park decides in order to throw an impromptu celebration for Da-song.
